Nature’s package keeps coconut water protected

Packaging Digest

Sometimes you just can’t improve on the package Mother Nature designed. That was the conclusion Genuine Coconut Water came to for coconut water, popular these days for consumers looking for a crisp, natural and refreshing beverage. So it found a way to poke a hole in a coconut, plug it and sell it at retail.

Consumers drink the 100% certified organic and raw, non-processed coconut water directly from the fruit itself. Minimally packaged, the film-wrapped coconut sits in an open carton, which includes a straw.

The patented easy-opening system is a ring made of recycled coconut husk fiber and natural resin. This allows the brand to tout that Genuine Coconut Water is a 100% organic certified, authentic, ecological and almost totally biodegradable drink because it uses only natural coconut resources.

Q&A with Mr. U-kit Tang-u-thaisuk, Production Printing Division Manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Thailand) Co Ltd

[Q] How does Konica Minolta plan to empower the digital printing landscape for the region in the next 5 years?

[A] The percentages of digital product adoption in the commercial printing and industrial printing sectors are low at under 5%, and digital printing is a market set to see significant growth in the future. Konica Minolta plans to expand our product lineup with digital printing solutions in the industrial printing segment. Last year, we made investments in France-based MGI, which excels in label and package printing in order to boost our ability to answer growing demand for digital products in this segment.

In the near future, we are going to sign more contracts with large commercial printing companies to increase label and package business volume as well as ramp up sales to medium-sized companies dedicated to label printing. Our top-of-the-line bizhub PRESS C1100, shift the sales focus from the traditional core customers — small commercial printing companies — to medium-sized as well as large commercial printing companies, which account for roughly 50% of all printing volume in the industry. We will take advantage of the new AccurioJet KM-1 as well as products from MGI to strengthen our organization to acquire high print volume.

[Q] Are there any rising trends that one can look out for in the printing industry in Thailand and the overall Southeast Asia region?

[A] Digital decorative printing will be a game changer for print and packaging in Thailand and the overall Southeast Asia region. Now, print buyers are demanding shorter runs, more personalization and innovative applications. In other words, they are not buying just prints, but they buy something that's valuable, much more compelling, differentiated and visual appealing. To create valuable print, it has nothing to do with color printing, but it has to do with finishing. Digital decorative printing will give printers a wide range of new market opportunities as well as help printers to avoid price competition.

[Q] Why did Konica Minolta choose to repeat its participation at PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2017?

[A] PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL is like a mini-Drupa in Southeast Asia region. Last two years ago, Konica Minota joined this trade show and we had a tremendously success in term of sales and business opportunities. This year, we also choose PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL to be the event for our new business unit and new products launch. We trust in the professionalism of the trade organizer and how the exhibition is the leading showcase for the packaging and printing industries in the region.

[Q] Would there be any new machinery, products or technologies, Konica Minolta will be showcasing at PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2017? What are the other activities visitors can look forward to at Konica Minolta’s booth in this year?

[A] We are pleased to inform that Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Thailand) will launch our new business unit which is “Industrial Printing Business”. Industrial Printing Business will offer innovative ways to expand services and streamline production of Thai printing and packaging industries. Highlighted and to be launched products for this new business unit are bizhub PRESS C71cf and MGI Meteor Unlimited Colors Press.

The bizhub PRESS C71cf is a digital roll-to-roll label press aimed to fill the gap between entry-level and high-end label printing companies. It runs at maximum 18m/min with high resistant toner and high resolution printing at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi. The press is specifically designed for narrow web applications.

MGI Meteor Unlimited Colors SE+ will be launched and shown live in action as a powerful new digital print production system that allows commercial printers and converters the ability to produce output with a virtually unlimited number of colors via the blending of CMYK toner and the reflective of foil – including a rainbow spectrum of hues with metallic, glitter and holographic effects.

[Q] How can Konica Minolta’s latest machines/technologies help printers archive better work flow?

[A] Konica Minolta utilizes skilled R&D power to develop unique products to fulfill customer needs in the digital professional printing market. For decades, we are the leader in color production printing field and now with the rise in label and packaging market, we also offer the special printing systems including package and label printing and 3D component printing. In response to the upcoming trend for decoration printing, we also has added MGI’s output equipment including hot foil stamping and embossing jobs to our portfolio.
